Background of the Study
Land tenure disputes have long been a significant driver of rural conflicts in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in areas where agricultural practices are central to the economy. In Bali Local Government Area (LGA), Taraba State, land ownership and use have been sources of prolonged tensions between farmers, herders, and other rural communities. Disputes over land boundaries, inheritance rights, and access to water sources have frequently escalated into violent confrontations. Bali, situated in the middle-belt region of Nigeria, has witnessed recurring clashes between different ethnic and cultural groups, each vying for control over agricultural lands and grazing routes.
The lack of clearly defined land tenure systems, combined with insufficient legal and institutional mechanisms to resolve land disputes, has contributed to the persistence of land-related conflicts. As agricultural land becomes more scarce due to population growth and environmental factors such as desertification and deforestation, competition for these resources has intensified, exacerbating tensions among local communities. This study seeks to assess the impact of land tenure disputes on rural conflicts in Bali LGA and evaluate the potential for improved land management systems to prevent conflicts and promote peaceful coexistence.
Statement of the Problem
Land tenure disputes in Bali LGA have led to frequent outbreaks of violence and insecurity, particularly in areas where farming and pastoral activities intersect. Despite efforts by the government and traditional authorities to mediate these disputes, the persistence of unclear land ownership and boundaries has fueled ongoing hostilities between farmers and herders, often along ethnic lines. This situation has negatively impacted the social and economic development of the region, with displaced persons unable to access their land and many residents living in constant fear of violence. The study seeks to evaluate how land tenure issues contribute to rural conflicts in Bali and provide recommendations for resolving land disputes to promote peace.
Objectives of the Study
To examine the role of land tenure disputes in driving rural conflicts in Bali LGA.
To assess the effectiveness of current land management systems in Bali and their role in mitigating land-related conflicts.
To propose solutions for improving land tenure systems and resolving land disputes to reduce conflicts in Bali.
